During this benchmarking call, medical inflation emerged as a major challenge in Singapore. Health care costs throughout the country have been on an upward trend for a number of years. The high cost of insurance premiums is another area of concern, leading some companies to use claims data to gain insight into high utilization areas so that cost increases can be addressed. Benefit equity between Singaporeans and expatriates has also become a problem; for example, while expatriate salaries in Singapore have risen, employee benefits have declined significantly. As a result, some companies are offering optional benefit plans, which are more robust and help address the concerns of non-Singaporeans. Several companies are also spearheading well-being initiatives to improve the overall health of the country.
