A total of 38 large employer members of Business Group on Health responded to this survey, conducted between August 3 and August 10, 2021. The purpose of this survey was to determine how large employers support employees that receive balance billing related to out-of-network (OON) ground ambulance.

- The majority of survey participants don’t know if employees are being billed by OON ground ambulance providers. Of those that do, 34% of employees have been subject to balance billing.
- Of the large employers tracking claims for ground ambulances, 23% reported an increase in the percentage of employees receiving balance bills. Fifteen percent of those employers saw a significant increase.
- When an employee receives a balance bill from an OON ground ambulance provider, 77% of respondents will offer additional support beyond directing the employee to follow the appeals process to help resolve the bill.
