“Hospitals of the future won’t look the same,” claims Business Health Agenda 2019 keynote speaker Dr. Stephen Klasko, CEO of Jefferson Health and President of Thomas Jefferson University. When thinking about the “tipping point” as it relates to health care transformation, we need to consider the degree to which clinicians can implement new methodologies and truly integrate personalized medicine with the many other aspects of health we’ve come to prioritize.
In recent years, we have encouraged employees embrace consumerism when making health care decisions, whether through the promotion of shared decision making or utilization of transparency tools. We know that employee engagement is a top issue for employers, but it’s also important to consider the role of physicians and other health care providers in driving broader industry change. They too contribute to promoting appropriate utilization of health care services and determining cost efficient and personalized treatment pathways.
We’re seeing shakeups of medical school admissions and the profession beginning to focus on encouraging creativity among health care practitioners. Developing a provider workforce better able to empathize and connect with their patients is only one example of the potential intersections between addressing social determinants of health and improving health care delivery. Thomas Jefferson University, alongside other top U.S. medical schools has recently begun adopting more unconventional recruitment methods to attract applicants and students similar to those used by tech companies to find more “empathic [and] creative students” to pursue careers in medicine.
Dr. Klasko is the only hospital executive named among Fast Company’s Most Creative People in Business for 2018, further cementing his status as a true thought leader and innovator within the field.
